What a Huntsville installation includes
The visit that produces a real quote measures rooms, doorways, stairs, and the subfloor. It notes whether the house is on a crawl space or a slab. A large share of newer houses around Huntsville, Madison, and Hampton Cove are slab-on-grade. Older in-town houses are more often wood framed over a crawl space, which is where solid nail-down flooring still makes sense.
The quote should say who moves furniture and appliances, whether shoe mold and baseboards come off, how transitions at tile and carpet will be handled, and whether floor registers get extended. If those lines are missing, the per-square-foot number is not comparable to another bid.
Material has to be in the house, not in a garage that is not conditioned, while it acclimates. The crew checks moisture in the wood and in the subfloor with a meter. They install when those readings agree with the product instructions. [PARTNER: typical acclimation window] is the only duration that should be treated as this company’s practice. Until that is filled in, do not accept “three days” from a webpage, including this one, as a rule.
How long should hardwood flooring sit before installing?
It should sit until it is stable, not until a calendar page turns. Solid strip in a humid July, with the air conditioning off during the day, can take longer than the same load in January with the heat running at a steady temperature. Engineered flooring is more stable, and some products allow a shorter wait. The data sheet is the authority.
While it sits, the house should be at the temperature and humidity you actually live with. Acclimating with the windows open, then closing up and running the air after the floor is down, is how you build a floor that will gap or cup in the first season.
Solid, engineered, and the slab question
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its thickness. It is fastened to a wooden subfloor. It can usually be sanded more than once if the original floor was thick enough. It moves across its width when indoor humidity changes. Huntsville’s humid summers and heated winters are enough swing to open small gaps in winter and close them in summer. That movement is normal. Covering a solid floor with a vapor-tight rug for months, or letting the house sit damp, is what turns normal movement into cupping.
Engineered hardwood is a wood wear layer on a core. A thick wear layer can be sanded. A thin one is a veneer: it can be recoated, and it should not be sold as a floor you will sand to bare wood later. The core is why engineered flooring is the usual choice on a slab. The downside is that a wet slab or a wet mop that floods the joints can still swell the core. Ask for the wear-layer thickness in sixteenths of an inch, in writing.
Below-grade basements are a bad place for solid wood and a cautious place for engineered wood. If the basement smells damp or the slab has efflorescence, fix the water before you buy a floor.
Nail-down, glue-down, and floating
Nail-down or staple-down is the usual method for solid strip over plywood, and for many engineered products over wood. The subfloor has to be thick enough to hold the fastener and flat enough that the boards do not bridge dips. Squeaks come from movement, often a subfloor that was not fastened well to the joists before the hardwood went down.
Glue-down is common for engineered flooring on a slab, using an adhesive rated for the moisture level that was measured. The adhesive is not interchangeable. A cheap mastic can fail the warranty even when the boards look fine on day one.
A floating floor locks together and rests on an underlayment. It can be faster, and it can sound hollow if the underlayment is wrong or the slab is out of flat. Floating floors need expansion space at the perimeter. Pinching that space with a tight trim detail is how a floor buckles in August.
What should I put down before installing hardwood floors?
Start with flat and dry, then add only the layer the manufacturer names.
On plywood, that may mean screwing down loose sheets, sanding high seams, and filling low spots with a patch rated for flooring, not a feather of joint compound that will crumble. A moisture retarder, if required, is the one in the instructions.
On concrete, the first step is a moisture test. Relative humidity probes, calcium chloride tests, and meter readings are different tests with different pass numbers. The product you are buying names which test and which number. If the slab fails, the choices are to wait, to use a mitigation system that product allows, or to pick a different floor. Installing anyway and hoping is how a buckle shows up after the furniture is back.
Red rosin paper, felt, and plastic are not a style choice. Using the wrong one can trap moisture against solid wood or keep a glue-down floor from bonding.
Timeline from measure to walkthrough
After the measure, material is ordered. Some species and widths are stocked. Others, including many white oak runs, are an order. The site does not publish a lead time. [PARTNER: material lead time] belongs here once a contractor has one.
Install time depends on empty rooms, stairs, and how much subfloor work was hiding under the carpet. A clear first floor is a different week from a house that is lived in room by room. [PARTNER: install duration per 1,000 sq ft] is the figure to ask for, and it should say whether that includes coating, which a site-finished floor needs and a factory-finished floor does not.
Factory-finished flooring can take foot traffic sooner because the finish cured at the mill. Site-finished flooring needs the stay-off time of the finish. Do not let a quote blur those two.
When installation is the wrong job
If the existing floor is solid, dry, and thick enough, refinishing is often the better spend. If the floor was flooded and the subfloor is soft, new hardwood on top of that failure will follow the failure. If you need a surface that can be soaked, hardwood is the wrong product and a different floor belongs in that room.
The written quote is the scope. This page is the checklist for reading it.
Questions on this page
How long should hardwood flooring sit before installing?
Until moisture readings in the flooring and the subfloor are inside the range the manufacturer publishes for that product. A fixed number of days is a guess. A closed-up, air-conditioned Huntsville house in summer is a different job from a house that has been open.
What should I put down before installing hardwood floors?
Whatever the flooring warranty names for that substrate. Over a slab that is often a vapor retarder or a glue system with a moisture limit. Over plywood it may be a paper or nothing but the fasteners. A generic plastic sheet is not automatically the right layer.
Can you install solid hardwood on a concrete slab?
Usually no, especially on a ground-level or below-grade slab. Engineered flooring is the product built for that condition, and only when the slab passes the moisture test the manufacturer requires.
